Accra, Ghana- The National Theatre in Accra is set for major rehabilitation next year following an allocation made in the 2026 national budget. The Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, announced in Parliament that the project forms part of the government’s broader plan to upgrade cultural infrastructure across the country.

“Mr. Speaker, in 2026, the government will rehabilitate the National Theatre in Accra. We will also commence site acquisition and design of a second national theatre in Kumasi,” Dr. Forson said.

While specific technical details of the rehabilitation were not outlined in the budget statement, the project is expected to address longstanding structural and technical challenges at the facility. Upgrades will target sound, lighting, stage equipment, rehearsal rooms, and backstage areas to enable the venue to support larger performances, year-round programming, and increased revenue generation.

Management of the National Theatre has been working to strengthen governance and rebuild internal capacity ahead of the refurbishment. The project is being coordinated alongside efforts by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts to professionalise the institution’s management through newly appointed boards and executive teams.

The government expects the restored complex to support creative industry jobs, attract cultural tourism, and provide a modern, accessible space for artists and audiences. Recent outreach and education programmes at the theatre indicate growing momentum as preparations continue for the redevelopment.

If the project proceeds as outlined in the budget, the National Theatre could transition from an ageing landmark to a revitalised performing arts hub. The success of the initiative, however, will depend on transparent procurement processes, consistent funding, and effective operational reforms.
