Cape Coast, Ghana —The Maths and Science crown remains in Cape Coast, as Mfantsipim School etched their name once again in Ghana’s academic history by defending their National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ) championship title, earning a record-breaking fourth trophy in the prestigious competition.
The ‘Botwe Boys’ clinched the 2025 title with an authoritative 56 points, outpacing two-time champions St. Augustine’s College and Opoku Ware School in a pulsating finale held at the NEC Auditorium, University of Cape Coast.
The final contest brought together three of Ghana’s most celebrated academic powerhouses ;Mfantsipim School (Central Region), St. Augustine’s College (Augusco) (Central Region) and Opoku Ware School (OWASS) (Ashanti Region)
From the onset, Mfantsipim asserted dominance, taking an early lead with surgical precision in the opening round. St. Augustine’s College, however, mounted a determined comeback in Round Two, briefly snatching the lead before Mfantsipim regained control during the Problem of the Day segment.
The turning point came in the electrifying Round Five (The Riddles), where the defending champions correctly answered three riddles in succession a feat that sealed their victory and sent the entire auditorium into a thunderous ovation. “When they answered the third riddle correctly, the auditorium erupted in cheers. It was a victory achieved through composure, strategy, and unbridled academic talent,” said one spectator at the Grand Finale.
Mfantsipim school won a total of 56 points, St. Augustine’s College scoring 45 point and Opoku Ware pulling 29 points.
This historic victory marks Mfantsipim’s fourth NSMQ title following previous wins in 1999, 2014, and 2024 and represents a rare back-to-back championship, further cementing their legacy as one of Ghana’s premier academic institutions.
The win also highlights Mfantsipim’s consistency, mentorship culture, and deep-rooted academic discipline that have made the school a formidable force in science and mathematics education.
Despite a valiant showing, St. Augustine’s College and Opoku Ware School fell short of unseating the champions. Competing on home soil, Augusco delivered a strong performance to secure the 1st runner-up position, while OWASS claimed the 2nd runner-up spot with 29 points.
