Kumasi, Ghana- A tragic event has struck the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST): a student has died after reportedly falling from the second floor of an off-campus hostel in Ayeduase in the early hours of Sunday, February 8, 2026. The university has confirmed the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Ransford Amankwah Asomani, a second-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Agribusiness Management.
According to university authorities, the incident occurred around 1 a.m., when Mr. Asomani was believed to be at the top of the building with a friend, who is said to be a former university student. Details surrounding the circumstances of the fall remain under investigation.
Speaking to the media, KNUST’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, described the incident as deeply saddening and said the university community remains in shock.
He explained that a distress call was received in the early hours of Sunday, indicating that the student had fallen from a hostel in the IEBRC area, off campus. Colleagues of the deceased attempted to transport him to the KNUST Hospital, but they were met and assisted by the KNUST District Police Patrol Team. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival. Dr. Bekoe expressed profound sadness on behalf of the university community.
He added that counsellors have been deployed to support students residing in the hostel, as well as the family of the deceased, as part of efforts to help them cope with the loss.
Dr. Bekoe further indicated that KNUST has, over the years, put in place several security measures aimed at safeguarding students, including assessing off-campus hostels before students are allowed to patronize them, installing CCTV cameras at strategic locations, expanding street lighting in surrounding communities, and collaborating with community watchdog volunteers.
Meanwhile, the matter is being investigated by the KNUST District Police Command in collaboration with the university security services. Management has assured the public that further updates will be provided once investigations are concluded.
In a separate press release, management extended heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr. Asomani and reaffirmed its commitment to the safety, security, and well-being of all students and staff.
