Boankra Inland Port at 83% Completion in Phase One – Transport Minister Pushes for Early Delivery
Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe in a crunch meeting with team.
Accra, Ghana- Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has told Parliament that the government is engaging the concessionaire on the Boankra Inland Port project to accelerate work toward an earlier completion date.
Addressing the House on Thursday, the Minister disclosed that Phase One of the project is currently at 83 percent completion, while the overall physical progress of the entire facility stands at 50.54 percent.
Nikpe explained that Phase Two of the project will include critical infrastructure such as external boundary roadworks, sewer line construction, transit facilities, referral stations, and other civil works. He described progress as steady but cautioned that projecting a definite operational date, particularly by the end of 2026, remains challenging at this stage.
“It will be very difficult for me to give [a specific timeline],” the Minister told Parliament, adding that the government will provide the necessary support to the concessionaire to ensure the project is delivered as expected.
The Boankra Inland Port, located in the Ashanti Region, is a strategic logistics hub designed to ease congestion at Ghana’s seaports, facilitate inland cargo handling, and improve trade efficiency within the sub-region. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to serve as a critical interface between Ghana’s ports and landlocked countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
Nikpe reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the concessionaire to expedite progress, noting that collaboration and sustained oversight will be key to meeting delivery expectations.
The Boankra project is central to Ghana’s ambition to become a regional trade and logistics hub. With Phase One nearing completion, focus is now on the speed and coordination needed to make the facility fully operational within a realistic timeframe.
