Police Probe Fatal Shooting at Mining Site in Axim District

Sekondi, Western Region - The Western Regional Police Command has begun investigations into a shooting incident at a mining company’s site at Adelekezu near Dadwen in the Axim District, which led to the death of a teenage boy and the destruction of several properties.

According to a statement issued by Superintendent Olivia ET Adiku, Head of Public Affairs at the Western Regional Command, the incident occurred on Saturday, December 13, 2025. Police responding to the scene found two 4×4 SUVs, two tipper trucks, one pickup, and a Toyota Land Cruiser badly damaged. Some of the vehicles were set ablaze by irate youth from the community.

Preliminary investigations revealed that some youth from Adelekezu had a misunderstanding with private security personnel of the mining company while attempting to invade the company’s concession. During the confrontation, the youth allegedly tried to disarm one of the guards. In the struggle, the security officer’s pump-action gun went off, hitting the boy. He was rushed to the Axim Government Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The news of his death reportedly angered residents, who stormed the mining site, setting vehicles and other company properties on fire and threatening to attack workers. A police team arrived at the scene and rescued 11 workers of the company. Five suspects were also arrested in connection with the unrest. They include Gyenyame Owusu (38 years), Matthew Asamah (24 years), Nana Yaw (15 years), Yaw Opoku (16 years) and Kojo Agyei (21 years). The suspects are being held for causing harm and unlawful damage.

The Western Regional Command has urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing investigations to ensure justice is served.

“The Western Regional Command calls on members of the community to remain calm and cooperate with the investigation to ensure justice is served,” the statement said.
