Mahama Cuts Sod for 200km Wenchi–Bole–Sola Road to Boost Regional Trade and Integration
Sola, Savannah Region —President John Dramani Mahama has cut sod for the construction of the 200-kilometre Wenchi–Bole–Sola Road, a major project under his government’s Big Push Agenda aimed at improving transportation and trade across three northern regions and connecting Ghana’s road network to neighboring countries.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held in Sola in the Savannah Region, marked the official commencement of works on the N12 international highway, which runs through the Bono East, Savannah, and Upper West Regions serving as a key economic link to Burkina Faso and Mali. The project will see a complete reconstruction of the Wenchi–Wa highway, transforming it into a modern, dual-lane corridor capable of handling heavy-duty traffic from Ghana’s northern trade routes.
Speaking at the event, President Mahama said the new road forms a vital part of his administration’s infrastructure-driven development plan to connect regions, markets, and communities. “We are here to open a new corridor of progress to reconnect regions, markets, and families,” the President stated. “This road will renew the promise of inclusive development and affirm that every part of Ghana deserves modern infrastructure, dignity, and opportunity.”
He explained that the reconstruction aligns with Ghana’s broader goal of facilitating cross-border trade and reducing travel time between key production zones and neighbouring states.
The Minister for Roads and Highways, who joined the President at the ceremony, described the project as a landmark in Ghana’s infrastructure modernization efforts, crediting the Big Push Agenda for securing financing and execution continuity. “Your Excellency, from Wenchi to Wa is about 200 kilometers of road. No government has ever created this level of ambition,” he said. “Yes, a section of this road was awarded before you came, but the contractor never turned up because financing was never secured. You came and didn’t cancel it — instead, you included it in the Big Push, and that’s why we are doing Wenchi to Wa today.”
The ceremony also marked the reconstruction of the Fufulso–Sola Road, a previously completed route from Mahama’s earlier tenure that has since deteriorated due to lack of maintenance. The same contractor handling the Wenchi–Wa Road has been tasked with repairing and upgrading the Fufulso–Sola stretch to restore its durability and improve transport access between rural communities and major markets. “We are not just building roads,” Mahama emphasized.
“We are building access — access to opportunity, to education, to healthcare, and to hope.”
The Wenchi–Bole–Sola–Wa corridor forms part of the Trans-West African Highway network, linking southern Ghana’s industrial zones to the Sahel region.
The project could significantly boost agricultural exports, tourism, and logistics services while stimulating local economies in the Bono East and Savannah regions.
The initiative also supports the 24-Hour Economy vision under Mahama’s administration by improving road reliability for cargo movement and reducing logistical bottlenecks along Ghana’s northern frontier.
