President Mahama Reconstitutes National Hajj Committee; Appoints Alhaji Ibrahim Tanko as Chairman

Accra, Ghana –President John Dramani Mahama has, with immediate effect, reconstituted the National Hajj Committee (NHC) to oversee the organization of Ghana’s 2026 Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.
In a statement from the Office of the President, Alhaji Ibrahim Tanko, a former Member of Parliament for Yagaba-Kubori, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Committee. Alhaji Tanko previously served in the same capacity during the Mahama administration and is widely regarded for his experience in coordinating large-scale religious operations.
The reconstitution of the Committee is aimed at ensuring a smooth, transparent, and well-coordinated pilgrimage for Ghanaian Muslims, addressing the logistical and welfare challenges that have affected past Hajj exercises.
The committee includes a mix of experienced administrators, public officials, and representatives:

According to the Presidency, the new Committee will be responsible for logistics, accommodation, transportation, flight coordination, and pilgrim welfare before, during, and after the pilgrimage.
“The reconstitution reflects the government’s renewed commitment to ensuring a stress-free and well-managed pilgrimage experience for all Ghanaian pilgrims,” the statement read.
President Mahama emphasized his administration’s dedication to supporting the Muslim community, noting that the 2026 Hajj will benefit from enhanced planning and coordination to ensure safety, comfort, and value for money for all pilgrims.
The National Hajj Committee, which operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, is expected to announce further details on travel schedules, fees, and registration procedures in the coming week.
