Dambai, Oti Region — The Oti Region is set to host a 500-megawatt (MW) biomass power plant, marking a major step in Ghana’s industrial transformation agenda under the government’s “24-Hour Economy” initiative.

The plant, which will become one of West Africa’s largest biomass energy facilities, is designed to supply renewable electricity while stimulating agribusiness and job creation across the region.

Officials describe the project as a flagship component of the 24-Hour Economy an initiative that seeks to enhance productivity and infrastructure through round-the-clock economic activity.

Beyond power generation, the facility will anchor a comprehensive agricultural value chain, linking farmers, local industries, and service providers in what government planners call an “integrated rural economy model.”

Traditional authorities in the Nkwanta North District have been engaged to allocate and cultivate energy grass to serve as the plant’s primary feedstock, ensuring sustainable supply and community participation.

Nana Mprah Besemuna III, former President of the Oti Regional House of Chiefs, welcomed the project as a transformative milestone for the region. “The initiative is a long-awaited solution to the region’s unstable electricity supply and provides a compelling vision for transforming the Oti Region’s economy,”
Nana Mprah Besemuna III stated.

Energy experts say the project will strengthen Ghana’s renewable energy mix, reduce dependence on thermal imports, and support the country’s commitment to sustainable, low-carbon growth.

It is also expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, particularly in biomass cultivation, logistics, and maintenance, while opening new markets for rural farmers in the Oti enclave.

Once operational, the 500MW biomass facility will help stabilize power supply to the northern electricity corridor a key step toward achieving equitable energy access nationwide.
