Political Showdown: Alan Kyerematen’s “United Party” (UP)

Alan Kyerematen Flagbearer of United Party

Ghana’s political landscape is bracing for a dramatic twist as Alan Kyerematen, founder of the Movement for Change, officially rebrands his movement into the United Party (UP)  a move that could redefine the nation’s 2024 political contest. The announcement, made during a highly publicized event in Accra, positions the UP as a “third force” to challenge Ghana’s two-party dominance by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to Kyerematen, the United Party represents “a new dawn of inclusive governance” built on national unity, economic renewal, and youth empowerment. “Ghana’s politics has become too divisive. We need a united, non-partisan approach to national development,” Kyerematen emphasized during his address.

The announcement of the name “United Party” quickly stirred controversy within Ghana’s political circles. Leaders of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have claimed historical ownership of the title, arguing that it traces back to the political tradition that gave birth to the NPP itself. Party communicators have dismissed any notion of reconciliation or “amnesty” for Kyerematen, with insiders hinting that legal action over the use of the name may be imminent.

Adding to the debate, former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, advised that Alan Kyerematen should have chosen a completely new name to reflect his vision of a true “third force.” According to him, Kyerematen’s decision inadvertently ties his movement to the same political lineage he claims to be breaking away from. “He talked about breaking the duopoly that’s where he made the mistake,” Fuseini remarked. “He should have gone with another name.”

Political analysts note that while Kyerematen’s move is bold, it reopens long-standing debates about Ghana’s political heritage and the boundaries of legacy branding in modern politics. According to Alan Kyerematen, the vision of the United Party is to transform Ghana into an economic powerhouse by 2040  a blueprint he calls “Vision 2040.” He stated that if Ghanaians give him the nod in 2024, the country could become a “paradise,” emphasizing that the party’s mission is to build a united, secure, peaceful, and prosperous nation.

Kyerematen further promised equal opportunity for all Ghanaians, asserting that for too long, opportunities in Ghana have been reserved for a privileged few. “What we have witnessed since independence is that opportunity is for only some people,” he reiterated. “The United Party is going to change that narrative and make Ghanaian politics truly inclusive.”
