Mahama Orders Immediate Extension of Tema–Dawa Rail Line

Mahama Directs Immediate Extension of Tema–Dawa Rail Line

ACCRA, Ghana — President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ministry of Transport to expedite work on extending the Tema Port railway line to the Dawa Industrial Enclave in the Greater Accra Region.

The directive was issued on Monday, October 20, 2025, during a meeting with the Trades Union Congress (TUC) led by Secretary General Joshua Ansah — and key industry stakeholders at the Jubilee House.
During the discussions, the union raised concerns about salary arrears for railway employees. President Mahama assured the group that the Minister of Finance would be briefed to make allocations toward clearing the outstanding salaries.

According to a statement published on presidency.gov.gh, the project aims to facilitate the efficient movement of goods and industrial materials from Tema Port to Dawa, while also providing a safe and reliable transport system for thousands of workers commuting from Ashaiman and nearby communities.

The initiative forms part of the government’s broader effort to enhance the utility of the Tema–Mpakadan Rail Corridor, which became operational earlier this year, pending the completion of the Mpakadan Inland Port. The plan follows recommendations from the Transport Ministry to redeploy more than one hundred railway workers.

Addressing infrastructure updates, President Mahama emphasized that the dismantling of obsolete rail tracks should be handled by existing railway staff to ensure job retention. He further directed that recycled metals from the exercise be supplied to domestic industries for reuse.

“The rail sector remains a critical driver of Ghana’s industrial transformation. Linking our ports directly to our production enclaves is key to cutting transport costs and boosting productivity,” the President stated.

Industry experts note that the rail extension will significantly reduce road congestion, lower logistics costs for manufacturers, and further position Dawa as one of Ghana’s fastest-growing industrial hubs.
