Police Probe Murder of Senegalese Goalkeeper in Ghana

ACCRA, Ghana — The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu, has taken direct control of the investigation into the death 18-year-old Senegalese goalkeeper Cheikh Touré in Ghana, after allegedly being kidnapped by individuals posing as football scouts.

In a statement released Monday, October 20, 2025, the IGP announced the deployment of a special investigative team comprising homicide investigators, forensic experts, and intelligence officers.

This team will support the Ashanti Regional Police Command in uncovering the facts and ensuring justice is served. “The initiative aims to complement ongoing efforts by the regional command,” the statement said.

Touré, a rising talent from Espri Foot Mbul Academy in Senegal, reportedly travelled to Ghana in early October seeking a professional trial opportunity. According to reports by GhanaWeb and Daily Sabah, he was abducted shortly after his arrival. His captors allegedly demanded a ransom his family could not afford to pay.

Police have yet to release full details, but sources indicate that multiple suspects are currently being tracked in connection with the case but have assured the general public of a thorough investigation to unravel the case and all perpetrators brough to justice.

The tragic death has reignited calls for stricter oversight of football scouting and recruitment activities, as well as greater protection for aspiring athletes seeking to advance their careers abroad.

“This is a human tragedy and a continental concern. We cannot continue losing young talents to fake agents and criminal networks,” said a senior official at the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
