Accra, Ghana — The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has directed that GH¢1,000 be deducted from the November salaries of all 276 Members of Parliament (MPs) to support Ghana’s fight against breast cancer.

The deduction, which will amount to GH¢276,000, will be supplemented by the Speaker’s Office to reach a total of GH¢300,000. The funds will be donated to the Breast Society of Ghana to aid its ongoing work in awareness creation, screening, and treatment of breast cancer.

“The Office will deduct one thousand Ghana cedis from each member’s salary for the month of November to be dedicated to the fight that we are all engaged in… The GH¢276,000 will be complemented to reach GH¢300,000,”
— Speaker Alban Bagbin announced during parliamentary proceedings.

Speaker Bagbin emphasized the need to go beyond symbolic observances, describing breast cancer as “a devastating disease” affecting women and families across Ghana. “This is a very important matter. I have seen and witnessed how devastating breast cancer is to our women. I think that if we had had some of these statements earlier on, we could have done more,” he stated.

The Speaker’s announcement comes immediately after Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October), signaling Parliament’s intent to translate awareness into tangible support. The GH¢300,000 donation is expected to boost the Breast Society’s capacity to extend free screening campaigns, provide treatment support, and sustain education programs throughout the year.

Civil society organizations and advocacy groups have commended the initiative as a demonstration of parliamentary leadership and social responsibility, urging that it sets a precedent for similar health-related commitments.

Analysts say the Speaker’s directive reflects a shift toward sustained engagement rather than one-off gestures a move that could strengthen national health response frameworks through consistent institutional backing.
